Open EdTech 2010: Campus Life! Rethinking the Online Campus Life of the 21st Century

The two previous editions of Open EdTEch examined what it means to be educated in the 21st century and how it affects the future of educational institutions. The two meetings have been very successful, in terms of valuable innovative knowledge, as the participants, experts from different disciplines from around the world, identified key trends for successfully building the next-generation learning experience.

external image 4031870034_3e0f1f4e61.jpgThis year, our proposal will continue to approach education in the 21st century, yet from a different angle: student’s life as on-line learners, the elements of engagement and motivation to learn, as we look beyond the on-line classroom material, course activity and faculty.

At the UOC we believe there is a need to rethink the learning environments of the future, so we can create the necessary conditions for great leaders to arise, for great achievers to lead, for great social entrepreneurs to change the world, and so on. In the past, online learning environments, limited originally by costs, technology and access, replicated what existed in traditional environments, in terms of classroom activity mostly (a place for resources, to discuss, to communicate, to grade). As the world becomes digital and global, there is a need to rethink these environments, as the way people live, relate, create and participate, have shifted and significantly changed, and the way we learn has also changed as well. The new digital culture brings about new opportunities and new ways of doing things.

external image 4030910742_cea8b99629.jpgWe then see the need to create online learning environments that motivate learners to learn, share, participate, lead, grow, etc. The online classroom environment will not, by itself, inspire and motivate learners, just as their classrooms in traditional off line settings and the faculty members are also not sufficient to motivate them. New learners need an enriching and inspirational surrounding, spaces, an environment that breathes and promotes flexibility, sharing, participation, possibilities for creating, personalizing, etc.

This year’s meeting will gather 30 experts in the fields of education, technology, art, design and others, to help conceive and produce innovative tools and strategies to create future on-line learning scenarios and will work toward designing the online learning environment of the future, and all its key elements, those that will be identified as to deeply motivate and encourage learner’s during their “campus life”.

This event is organized by the Office of Learning Technologies at Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC). The New Media Consortium (NMC) will once again facilitate and co-sponsor the meeting.

A Call to Action

Aimed at educational leaders worldwide, the Call to Action comprised a clear answer to the overall question that framed the 2009 summit-- How to create the university of the future. This was the goal of the forty leaders in open education and technology who met in Barcelona on October 19-20, 2009, at the Open EdTech Summit sponsored by the Open University of Catalunya and the New Media Consortium. Together, this group considered the question of how to design educational institutions that can be truly responsive to the needs of contemporary society and of today’s students.

Reimagining the 21st Century University
A group of 40 innovators in the field of education, new technologies and e-learning gathered in Barcelona to establish the new bases for the university of the future – a university based on digital technologies and open content, overcoming physical boundaries, being accessible to all and providing personalized and student-centered learning experiences.

The meeting outcomes included the following:

  • New requirements will drive new educational models
  • Flexible, personalized learning environments require core, standardized content
  • Even education has a learning curve
  • Institutions must be open to new and non-traditional sources of learning
  • Universities must foster good citizenship

What does it mean to be educated in the 21st century?
The Advisory Committee designed the program around the following four thematic areas:
  • Personalization of the learning process
  • Learning content development and delivery
  • Future technologies at the service of learning
  • Learning: everyone, everywhere and anytime
These four areas served as the basis for discussions that identified four essential attributes of an educational system that is capable of preparing students to thrive in today’s world -- see more in the Open EdTech 2008 Report
